Social exhaustion is a term that describes the feeling of being overwhelmed and drained by constant interactions with other people, whether it’s in the workplace, school, or even in our personal lives. There are several factors that can contribute to social exhaustion. These include: Unrealistic Expectations: With the rise of social media, we are bombarded with images and posts of people who seem to have perfect lives. Overcommitment: Many of us struggle with saying “no” to social events or obligations, leading to a packed schedule and little time for ourselves. Lack of Boundaries: In today’s constantly connected world, it can be challenging to set boundaries and disconnect from social interactions. Work or School Demands: The demands of work or school can also contribute to social exhaustion, as we may feel the need to constantly be “on” and interact with others to meet deadlines and expectations. Symptoms may include persistent fatigue, decreased motivation, irritability, reduced concentration, or even physical ailments like headaches or insomnia. Constant social interactions can trigger feelings of anxiety and depression in individuals who are already struggling with mental health issues. Chronic stress and fatigue can lead to weakened immune systems, making us more susceptible to illnesses.

I think of the idea of going out and meeting people, and it’s like I’m paralyzed by fear. My nervous system views talking to people in a non-formal setting as a high level threat and I just get overwhelmed and freeze again. I’ve been hurt so many times by people it’s impossible to envision having a good relationship with someone again. Yet I sound depressed when I talk to people so they don’t engage with me.
