Don't hit, punch, or yell.
It usually makes it worse.
Don't: Wait until a fight to think about how to break it up.
Don't: Panic or yell.
Panic will do to a fight what gasoline does to fire - intensify it quickly.
If you don't get the dogs back together after a fight a bit of scar tissue develops in their mind, and in your emotions.
After a few fights the scar can become too deep.
When this happens their is nothing that can be done.
Don't: Isolate the dogs from one another.

Never, never let dogs work it out themselves. I’m here to strongly advise you NOT to take that advise from anyone, even well-meaning relatives, friends, or neighbors. When dogs bully their housemates or instigate fights, these behaviors wind up being self-reinforced over and over again! Whoever the bully might be, that dog learns they can succeed at being a bully. Meanwhile, the dog that is bullied is under almost constant stress. Intervene and interrupt bully behavior to a housemate, obnoxious behavior to a housemate or any aggression shown to a housemate. Find help either by making an appointment with a Veterinary Behaviorist or make an appointment with a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant who has a lot of experience working with dog-dog aggression. I tell all of my clients who are dealing with any problematic dog behaviors to PREVENT, PREVENT, PREVENT them. Always remember that dogs are animals and think like animals! They have no morals!
