Dogs often jump when they’re excited or when they anticipate attention or play. Dogs learn that jumping can get them noticed and receive affection from their owners. Insufficient training or inconsistent reinforcement of desired behaviors can contribute to persistent jumping. Dogs jump on people because they are seeking attention. Provide Physical Exercise and Mental Stimulation to help release excess energy, which can contribute to jumping.

Most dogs jump up to get our attention. Your dog is likely to jump up at you when they’re excited to see you. But it could also be an attempt to communicate that they’re worried about something. The action of jumping up can become a channel for excited or nervous energy that dogs repeat again and again. This is because dogs generally do whatever works out well for them. So, if you reward your dog with attention whenever they jump up they’ll just keep doing it. Often, we encourage jumping up in puppies when they’re small and cute. But this can make things confusing for them when they grow up and we no longer want them to behave like this.

Most of the time, jumping only indicates that your dog is seeking attention. Of course, one of the most likely reasons is that your dog is just really excited to see you. If they jump up when you arrive home or after a period of absence, wagging their tail gleefully, they are probably just really happy to see you and cannot contain their excitement. There can be a number of reasons your dog is jumping up. Working out the reason can be helpful to know how to deal with it. Affection and excitement Of course, another reason for dogs jumping up could be aggression. But it is usually paired with other signs like lunging, snarling, barking, tail low, hackles raised etc… One thing that can cause jumping up, but that really ought to be quickly stopped is jumping up for food. This may be in a few scenarios such as: Jumping up to steal human food Jumping up because you are about to feed them their own food.

Dogs jump for all kinds of reasons: attention, excitement or not knowing what else to do when they see a person. We not only permit this behavior, we encourage it. We know we shouldn't encourage jumping, but a fuzzy puppy is just too cute to resist. We forget that cute behavior in a puppy can become a real nuisance when they grow up. Allowing your dog to jump on people can be dangerous too. You can end up scratched and bruised. A child or frail adult can be knocked down and seriously injured. Teach your dog that they receive no attention for jumping on you or anyone else. You can turn your back and only pet your dog when all four paws are on the floor. Teach your dog to do something that is incompatible with jumping up, such as sitting. They can't sit and jump up at the same time. If they are not sitting, they get no attention.

She's 1.5 years old. She is very friendly. When I went to the dog park for the first time she ran in and immediately jumped up on someone. It's the dog park, it's okay and expected that sometimes dogs jump up. My daughter knows dogs jump sometimes and we know that's just part of the deal. You really don't have to leave, it's okay. Jumping up is something we are working on right now.
