In nature, there are three positions in the dog pack - front, middle, and back - and each dog will gravitate to its natural place based on relative dominance, with the pack leaders always in front. The dogs in front provide direction and protection to the pack. They determine where the entire pack will go, and they fend off any dangers from the front. The dogs in the rear are primarily concerned with alerting to danger approaching from behind, and their function is to warn the rest of the pack. The dogs in the middle are mediators, communicating between the rear and the front. If you have more than one dog, you have to let them figure out the pack order amongst themselves. A dog's position in the pack is hardwired into him.

In any family situation we have someone who usually has the final say about important issues. This is PACK STRUCTURE, people from the very top, downwards, think of it as a ladder, on every rung is a person with a certain job to do. In the animal kingdom they have their Pack Structure, the top dog for instance is called the Alpha, the second on the next rung down, is the Beta, and so on throughout the pack with each dog taking its place within the structure. In a domestic situation where you have more than one dog, watch them and you will see that they have a pack structure/pecking order also, if you have two or more dogs, you have a pack, and only one can be the Alpha. The pack structure all round in a domestic situation has to be like a ladder, it becomes the Ladder of life, it should be adults then teenage children, then dog, then any young children. This means that young children shouldn’t give any corrections to the dog in any way, but can and will be great mates with the dog, in the dog’s mind, it will see the young children being beneath him. Top dog, comes first, then down the ranks with bottom dog, recognise their position in the pack at all times. A quick pat to the top dog first when they come to you together is in order, you are now recognising their dog pecking order/pack structure.

For the basis of understanding your dog and to generalise, all dogs will fall into one of three categories; Front of the pack, middle of the pack and back of the pack. Pack positions:- Front of the pack: These dogs are more confident and self assured. Middle of the pack: These are your happy-go-lucky dogs that everyone should want to have. Back of the pack: These are the nervous, sensitive or timid dogs. Then within these three positions in the pack you then need to look at the type of energy level the dog was born with. You get Low, medium and high. This in some ways is more important to know than the dogs pack position.
