You shouldn’t keep your dog in the crate for that long. Unless you’re able to drive home throughout the day to let your dog out, don’t keep them cooped up for the whole day. You should never use the crate as a “time out” spot because your dog will associate it with a hostile environment. It may make their anxiety worse or cause them to fear going into the crate, so you must ensure that the crate is associated with positive feelings. Don’t give in to their behavior, they will quickly learn that all they have to do is whimper or bark to be let out whenever they want. You shouldn’t force your dog into the crate if they don’t budge. Don’t “bop” the crate or raise your voice if your dog is making noise within the crate. Don’t rush them in or get visibly stressed out. Never physically move them in if they refuse.

A crate should be a calm, safe and pleasant haven for your dog to relax, chill out and call their little home from home. It should never be a place of punishment. If you stop making it a rewarding place, their desire to go there will reduce. Not all dogs like lots of bedding so go with what your dog seems to want – if they are pushing it out of the way they probably don’t want it! Repeating the steps will ensure your dog does not become fearful or over-excited. You can show your dog around, show them the ‘leave’ items, and practice your ‘off’ training to prevent them from getting onto the bed or the seating. When you want to use your crate outside of areas your dog has got used to, prepare well. Take the crate to where you want your dog to be, before you take your dog.
