There are many different types of animate and inanimate enrichment including behavioural, environmental, feeding, musical, scent, and social enrichment. Dogs need both animate and inanimate enrichment. Cognitive/behavioural enrichment involves mental stimulation. Environmental enrichment involves exposing an animal to environmental complexity. Feeding enrichment involves activities that include chewing or feeding, such as puzzle feeders or toys filled with food. Musical enrichment involves exposing dogs to music, with some research indicating that dogs respond well to classical music. Scent enrichment involves exposing dogs to novel scents, which has been shown to increase dogs’ level of engagement, reduce stress related behaviours, and increase time spent resting. Social enrichment can involve interactions with other dogs, people, and/or other animals.

There are 5 main categories in which enrichment can be provided. Food based enrichment is the most widely used method of enrichment as all animals require food to survive and the animals are also more inclined to interact. Sensory enrichment can encompass any of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Cognitive enrichment includes novel objects that occupy the animal’s time in a captive setting. Social enrichment involves housing animals of different species with others that they would naturally associate with or encounter in the wild. Physical Habitat plays an important role in its welfare, meeting their physical requirements and providing a positive environment for them to live.

Behavior based enrichment: Keepers select enrichment based on a particular behavior they would like to elicit from the animals.
Item based enrichment: Keepers select items to use as enrichment without a particular goal in mind.
Social: Conspecifics (other individuals of same species) ... is the animal usually solitary or do they spend their time in groups.
Cognitive: This enrichment includes mental stimulation and novel experience.

Sensory enrichment focuses on the stimulation of the animals’ senses. You can divide it into four subcategories: visual enrichment, olfactory (smell & taste) enrichment, auditory (sound) enrichment, and tactile (touch) enrichment. Food-based enrichment can be defined as the manipulation of food or method of providing food. Environmental or physical habitat or structural enrichment is defined as alteration of the physical elements of the enclosure. Manipulative or cognitive or tactile enrichment is described as cognitive and mental stimulation that requires problem-solving of different levels of complexity. This form of enrichment is focussed on organized interactions between conspecifics, interspecific or human-animal, which is social enrichment.
