It seems like the prevailing American opinion is that dogs can be left alone during the day for up to 8 hours. People from Britain or Australia scoff at this, call it abuse, and insist that they should never be left alone for more than 3-4 hours. My 6 month old lab mix is alone for up to 8 hours during the day on weekdays. Any longer than this and I pop home to walk him, and he gets day care once a week.
