We believe that dogs of all sizes are happier, healthier and safer when they can be indoors with their people the majority of the time. Dogs have a need to be social just like we do. Most dogs don’t exercise when they’re in a yard by themselves; they spend most of their time lying by the back door, waiting for “their people” to either let them in or come out and play with them. However, dogs do need exercise every day, so we recommend walking your dog or engaging him in a regular game of fetch. Dogs that spend most of their time outdoors are a risk for a variety of reasons. Dogs left alone in the yard for long periods of time often get bored, lonely and frustrated. Most dogs do enjoy spending time outdoors, but the time dogs spend alone outdoors must be balanced with quality time with “their people”.

You may have noticed already, but your dog loves being outdoors. Simply utter the phrase “let’s go outside” and chances are your dog will bolt to the nearest exit like lightning. For them, it is absolutely an opportunity to play and let loose. Their health depends on physical activity and exertion: Your dog requires exercise to stay mentally and physically healthy. Without it, their joints, muscles, mental acuity, and behavior can be impacted. Pet parents are encouraged to spend as much time as possible with their pups outdoors, going on long, leisurely walks, running at the park, and playing a game of fetch in the backyard. Being outdoors is inscribed in their DNA. Not only do dogs love being outdoors because it offers them a sense of that hereditary freedom, but they also can roam and explore. They love a change of scenery. Active dogs are healthy and happy dogs. Dogs love being outdoors and making this possible for them as often as possible is one of the most important things we can do as pet parents.

Some breeds are built for inside whereas others are best suited to stay outside. The size of the dog you have is also important, although some breeds can be deceiving. If you like your house to be pristine clean at all times, you might want to opt to keep your dog outside. The most significant consideration is the space you have. If like me you live in an apartment with a small balcony you're likely to keep your dog inside. I know people with an acreage who believe dogs belong outside period, so have built their dogs a pen that still gives them space to run but keeps them contained as well. It comes down to personal preference, personal circumstances and the dog you have.

While a dog or cat will survive just fine as long as they have food and shelter, the real effects of doing this will be seen in their behaviour. Both dogs and cats need companionship and being allowed to spend time indoors and interact with their humans helps them build a bond. Often the reasons a pet owner keeps an animal outside are selfish rather than for the good of the pet. Being inside not only restricts your pet’s movements in a literal sense, but the boredom and, sometimes, depression that comes along with this can lead to your pet sleeping an unhealthy amount. These factors can all contribute to your pet picking up weight. Being overweight can be just as harmful to the health of dogs and cats as it is to humans. Ensuring your animal gets access to the outside, whether it is on a walk or in the yard is important for their wellbeing. Dogs love digging in the earth, and while it can be frustrating if they are digging up your prize flowers, there can be no doubt that it brings them joy and happiness. Ultimately, letting a pet spend time outside in an enclosed yard or taking the time to ensure they get enough exercise through regular walks helps them avoid boredom, anxiety and depression. The ideal solution is to offer your pet access to the outdoors when they need it.

Dogs are very social creatures and they want to be with us. They’re not livestock, they’re not wild animals. They don’t want to be isolated in the backyard. Often people think that if they leave the dog in the yard, they’ll be having a really fun time, they’ll be playing and sniffing and enjoying themselves, and there are some dogs that enjoy it, but for many dogs, if they’re outdoors on their own, they’re going to be a bit bored. You may think the dog is getting exercise in the yard, but if you’re not out there playing with him, probably not. There’s some research on dogs in yards and it showed that they don’t actually do a huge lot. Novelty is very interesting to most dogs, so if he’s been inside for six hours, yeah, going outside is going to be really exciting for five minutes, but then if he’s out there by himself, there’s no enrichment, no social interaction; then we find dogs who enter into boredom barking. Just putting them outside is not enrichment all by itself. Dogs need our companionship.
