I thought initially maybe he was scared, but he wasn’t shaking or showing any signs of fear and it soon became apparent that he was more excited and anxious than anything. If he saw another dog, he would become even more frantic barking while he jumped back and forth over the seats. Generally these dogs start whining and barking the instant you put them in the car and continue all the way to the dog park, doggie daycare center or Grandma’s house. The same dogs also want to get into the front seat, which cannot only be annoying but also very dangerous. They block the drivers view, jump on the driver and may even go down by his legs and get in between their feet and the gas peddle or brake. I soon realized that the reason that Tyler was going crazy in the car on my way to work was that he was very excited to get there. He also thought that he was in charge of this journey and where the car was going. So if your dog is excited by the destination at the end of the car ride, this is where the issues start. If he then thinks he is in charge of where the car is going and he can’t steer and actually control the direction and the car’s speed, it is going to cause him to have extreme anxiety.

It could be that the car’s movement makes them nauseous. It could that be the sound and vibration of the engine are too much for them. Or it could be that they associate riding in the car with going somewhere they aren’t a fan of—like the vet. Many dogs can get an unsettled stomach in the car, just like humans. This is especially true for puppies whose ears are underdeveloped, which means they can’t yet regulate their balance well. You’ll have difficulty overcoming car anxiety until your dog’s motion sickness is taken care of. If your dog thinks of the car as a scary, just approaching it will produce anxiety.

Maybe your dog refuses to jump in the car, or they shake and pant as you drive. Some dogs experience motion sickness, which can make them adverse to riding in a car. If you are only traveling in the car with your dog to outings that they might not necessarily like — such as going to the vet or groomer — your dog might begin to associate the car with those less-than-desirable experiences. It’s also possible that something you weren’t aware of spooked your dog while they were riding in a vehicle. Dog car anxiety isn’t uncommon, but there are some steps you can take to help your dog get over their fear of car rides. First, it can help to pinpoint why exactly your dog has developed anxiety about car travel. Others lack a positive association with car rides.

This can be due to motion sickness, a previous bad event in the car like an accident, or anxiety about being trapped inside a giant, moving machine. A dog can even be put off car trips entirely if the usual destination is somewhere unpleasant like the vet. Puppies are more likely than adult dogs to get sick in the car, but many will grow out of their motion sickness as they mature. For those who don’t, fortunately, the steps above can help your dog become accustomed to a moving car. But if an upset stomach from motion sickness or anxiety still bothers your dog, here are a few tips to help ease your dog’s tummy.
