A room temperature of 16 to 20C is comfortable and safe for sleeping babies. Small babies are not very good at regulating their own temperature. When it's hot, a single layer is enough – lightweight cotton is best as it's breathable. A good rule of thumb is to give your baby 1 extra layer of clothing than what you're wearing. If you feel chilly, your baby probably does too. If your baby is sweating or their tummy feels hot to the touch, take off some of their clothing or bedding. Don't worry if your baby's hands or feet feel cool. This is normal. If it is very warm, your baby may not need any bedclothes other than a sheet.

A nursery thermometer will help you monitor the temperature of your baby's room. Your baby will sleep most comfortably when their room is between 16C and 20C. If you go out when it's hot, attach a parasol or sunshade to your baby's pushchair to keep them out of direct sunlight. Do not cover your baby's pushchair or pram with a blanket because it could lead to overheating. Check on them regularly to make sure they're not getting too hot. Do not dress your baby in too many layers. Choose lightweight clothing. Make sure your child wears loose-fitting clothing, sunglasses and a sunhat with a wide brim or a long flap at the back to protect their head, ears and neck from the sun.

You can take your newborn out of the house as soon as you feel comfortable. Start by getting some fresh air with short walks around your local area using a pram or sling. Your little one will usually need one more layer of clothing than you do. When you are out with your baby, make sure you dress them appropriately for the weather. Most parents tend to overdress their babies. But your baby usually just needs one more layer than you to feel comfortable. If your baby gets too hot or too cold, they will probably tell you by getting fretful and starting to cry. Don't forget to add or take layers off your baby when needed.
