Staying calm, even when anxious or stressed enables children to engage with others, participate in meaningful activities and enjoy life. Many children and young people respond inappropriately to events and situations and find it difficult to function and carry out every day activities. This may be influenced by fear of a particular sensation or activity, or due to becoming stuck in a pattern of behaviour. This can get in the way of communication with others and impact on everyday activities at home or at school. Sometimes children need their own personal space where they can block out extra noise and visual distractions.

Stress in schools is a growing problem in today’s society. It can have a significant impact on students’ physical and mental health, as well as their ability to focus on their school work. Using these strategies daily can enhance the learning process without disrupting student work. Exercise releases endorphins, which can help to reduce stress and tension. Hopefully these strategies can help students manage their emotions and feel calmer.

Just like adults, it’s easy for kids to get lost in troubling thoughts, and overwhelmed by the physical sensations that accompany stress. But kids can learn to calm themselves by focusing on what’s happening right now in their body, breath and surroundings – aka, mindfulness. Mindfulness helps focus and soothe a worried mind, and makes it easier for kids to control how they react to stress long-term. It’s an important key to resilience.
