Take off the rubber brake hoods. Spray the STI lever insides with WD40, then work it into the mechanism by clicking gears up and down. The WD40 will clean out the old grease, and at this step you should be able to feel some improvement already. Leave it for a few minutes for the solvent in the WD40 to evaporate from within. Once done, take some grease, regular Shimano works great, and apply it to as much exposed shifter mechanism as possible. XCP Lubricate & Protect for the shifters is also an option.

Just a reminder to lube up the shifter linkages from inside the car under the shifter cover. I had some difficulty changing gears, needing some force to push it into gear so I grabbed some silicone lube sitting in the garage and lubed it all up and it made it feel really smooth. I really didn't think that it would help, but man what a difference. For the heck of it I used zep 45 to spray up the linkages under the hood as well, not much of a difference from doing that, major difference from spraying the shifter linkages inside the car. I will lube it up more often now.
